Ray Longo: You’re going to see a different Chris Weidman

Legendary Trainer Ray Longo appeared on Ariel Helwani’s show “The MMA Hour” to discuss Chris Weidman’s upcoming bout against Gegard Mousasi.

When asked about if he ever thought Chris would be in a position where he hasn’t won in 2 years Longo replied, “It surprises me a little bit, but he hasn’t fought that much either… I would have never thought we’d be in this position but we’re ready to write his comeback story”. Weidman had been plagued by a series of neck injuries which led to him pulling out of his Championship bout against Luke Rockhold at UFC 199. Weidman’s next fight took place at UFC 205, and left the former champ knocked out in front of his hometown crowd at Madison Square Garden.

Longo admitted that Mousasi is a tough competitor, and is by no means an easy fight for Weidman in his current situation. Longo feels confident that Weidman is healthy and mentally prepared for his newest challenge, “I really believe you’re going to see a different Chris Weidman.”

Regadless of Longo’s confidence in his prized pupil, on paper Mousasi presents a very real threat to the career of Weidman. Mousasi is currently on a 4 fight win streak, 3 of which came by way of KO/TKO. Weidman is currently on a 2 fight losing streak both by KO/TKO. On April 8, 2017 we will see if Weidman gets his championship hopes back on track, or if Mousasi continues to climb the Middleweight ranks.
